Frequency Options available to WISPs

2.4 GHz Unlicensed PTMP
  • Frequency is saturated and unusable in most areas for WISps

2.5 GHz Licensed PTMP
  • Best choice for penetration, non line of sight (NLOS)
  • Best performance due to no interference
  • Hardest license to get, sprint has most of it locked down
  • Work with a broker to explore the options like Spect Spectrum http://selectspectrum.com/Contact_Us.html
  • The only guy I knew there left and I have not worked with them lately so this will be a cold call for you

3.65 GHz License lite
  • Nationwide licenses not being issued by FCC
  • Better than 5 GHz for NLOS
  • Available product lines utilizing LTE technology with best NLOS up to 3 miles in foliage
  • Licenses must be bought from existing holders, through brokers like Spect Spectrum http://selectspectrum.com/Contact_Us.html
  • I would not consider any product on 3.65 that was not LTE and I would not consider any LTE product unless it was Baicells.  We don't deploy Huawei or Telrad for WISP LTE, ask us why.

5 GHz Unlicensed PTMP and Backhauls PTP
LOS only
  • More spectrum than 3 GHz
  • Good performance with TDMA gear from Ubiquiti, best bang for the buck
  • Low cost of entry, fast ROI
  • Using for backhauls, while financially attractive,  significantly reduces available spectrum for PTMP so advise against using for backhaul

11 GHz & 18 GHz Licensed Backhauls PTP
  • Affordable, about $8k per link
  • Licenses are easily obtained
  • Great throughput, high reliability

24 Ghz Backhauls PTP
  • Unlicensed
  • High throughput
  • Suffer from possible rain fade so reliability is an issue on longer links
  • Low cost
